Designed for the demands of bikepacking and singletrack riding, Traverse Panniers fail-proof attachment to racks offer the convenience of a watertight dry bag that can be removed, and tough stretchy outer pockets so you'll never lose a jandal again.

Sold as pairs. Each single pannier has a maximum capacity of 8L, plus an additional 2L in each ULTRA Stretch pocket. At a total 20L per pair, it is the upper end of the capacity suitable for lightweight, off-road bikepacking.

While its predecessor, the Trail Panniers, focus on simplicity and fail-proof but hard-to-remove attachment to the rack (for bikepackers who unpack and camp where their bike is), the Traverse Panniers are designed for bikepackers who need to remove their bags from the rack to stay in accomodation away from their bikes.

Traverse Panniers are watertight. All options come with a seam taped, floating liner in film laminated triple ripstop, that has two non-corresponding seams to the outside layer, which is constructed with minimal stitching to prevent water ingress. (Please read Disclaimer below & FAQs).

Traverse Panniers' defining 4-way stretch pockets are a game changer for quick access and a life-saver for all the bikepackers who've lost jandals or expensive Birkenstocks that have slipped through bungy straps.

Features

Low profile: at only 9cm deep, the profile is a more aerodynamic design and allows your bike to fit through most squeeze gates and narrow bridges.

Construction: unique 1 piece drybag construction with 1 vertical seam and 1 'origami' base seam. Less seams = less water ingress. These seams are taped and the fabrics offered are laminated and waterproof.

Waterproof floating liner: Yep you heard it right. Not many bag makers make bold claims about keeping water out, but the liner is laminated with plastic film. Its seams don't line up with the seams in the outer bag, so if there was failure anywhere, water ingress will be very unlikely.

Fits most racks: But not T-racks due to the rack manufacturer's warnings for weight limits. There are 2x fixed velcro straps per bag and a spare strap each to shuffle the panniers back, if seat-stay mounted racks bring the panniers too close to the legs. The ideal setup using the outer two slots will fit the OMM Divide, Ortlieb Quick Rack & Tumbleweed Chromoly and other larger touring racks. The distance between either ends of the slots is 190mm.

4-way ULTRA Stretch pockets knitted with UHMWPE: the substantial size means more stretch! We're not stingy here, so you've got bonus material wrapping around the base to really shove the jandal down there.

Velcro straps: Velcro's sheer strength makes it more secure and impossible for bags to bounce off. The lack of hardware and mounting parts is a better safeguard against failure when riding in remote places.

Structure: supported by a new and improved triple-layered reinforced structure along the mounting rail to withstand vibrations and to support the jarring motions of riding off-road. Laser-cut military-style PALs fabric and polypropylene are stitched through the backing fabric, and the straps wrap around the two layers and an aluminium batten. The panniers have a coreflute inner backing.

Tested in the wild: Paper Roads is synonymous with bikepacking and is very much involved with their products in use in real situations. Customer feedback is received seriously – that is why the latest backing plate revision is more structural than ever and stress tested for 1800km in the Australian Outback, and in NZ's North Island off-road terrain in heavy rain.

Tips on ordering

Choosing a fabric for Holsters: the grade of fabric used for the holster does not make a huge amount of difference to the panniers' longevity. The outside of the pannier doesn't come in much contact with anything, besides the stretch pocket (which is likely to bear the brunt of impact in a crash, and has been crash tested, dragged through bush and bush lawyer). The test prototype used the most standard fabric grade, EPX200 on the side panels.

  • It makes most sense to order a holster in ULTRA fabric if the dry bags are ULTRA, to get the highest specs possible.
  • Choose EPX200 for bright colours and if you're moderately adventurous.
  • Choose EPLX400 for all-round durability.
  • Choose EPLX600 for more or less the same durability as the above, for a heavy-duty feel.

Choosing a fabric for Drybags: to get the most out of the Traverse Panniers if used for many multi-day off road brevets, the best recommendation is ULTRA400X for Drybags. When drybags are not carefully, tightly and thoughtfully packed, the micro vibrations will create friction with any mud and silt collected in the panniers, and friction inside of the bag against whatever surface it touches. The interior is lined with a triple ripstop to increase durability and waterproofness.

  • Choose ULTRA400X if you want to allow for misuse and if you're serious about bikepacking in harsh environments.
  • Choose ULTRA200X to save the most grams and have bags that are more durable than EPLX400.
  • Choose EPLX400 for all-round durability.

Usage & Care information

  • Please note these are small, bikepacking panniers at 8L maximum each, plus 2L in each stretch pocket. Ideally used alongside other bags to distribute the weight across your bike. If you have trouble packing minimally, please seek advice, or look for touring sized panniers. Maxxing out these panniers until the top doesn't roll down is incorrect usage.
  • To install, wrap the fixed velcro straps around the pannier rail. If you need to shift them back (for example for seat-stay mounted racks), use the spare strap in a slot so there's a slot in between the two. Use something like a flathead screwdriver to lever the aluminium batten so that the strap wraps around it.
  • ALWAYS PULL STRAPS TIGHT. Always test stability before heading out. Loosely mounted panniers will get damaged and can even damage your bike.
  • Lash the two horizontal velcro straps across the rack struts, especially if you're riding rough terrain.
  • Hook the shockcord around the rack's lower section.
  • T-racks such as OMM Elkhorn and Tumbleweed T-rack are not recommended by their manufacturers for panniers.

  • Do not throw into washing machine or dryer.
  • Scrub with a plastic bristle brush
  • If doing a thorough clean, use Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash and SolarProof.
  • Do no use detergents or softeners

Waterproofness & Disclaimer

With the many variables in bikepacking conditions, bike setups and varying items that may be packed into the waterproof liner of Traverse Panniers, Paper Roads does not take responsibility for puncture damage for this product or damaged property.

It is your responsibility to ensure the bag is not rubbing on sharp protruding parts and that there are no sharp objects or things with rough edges packed into it. Always think about wrapping hard objects in clothing and packing tightly. Anything that movies will rub thousands of times in 100kms, which far exceeds the abrasion resistance rating of the toughest Challenge Sailcloth fabric.

Traverse Panniers should withstand brief submersion in water as long as the top is rolled down tightly at least 3 times and clipped together.

If you find puncture damage, please trace back to the cause of it if you'd like to contact Paper Roads.

Always double-bag PASSPORTS.

There is risk involved in using ultra-light fabrics and they do not last forever. If this concerns you, you may be looking at using a tougher but heavy bag made from TPU, similar to what's used for pack rafting.
